Light Spring

The Light Spring palette is delicate, warm and fresh, resting on the cusp of Spring and Summer. Think of the colours of late spring, when most of the trees and flowers have bloomed and summer is almost arriving.

Light Spring is the lightest of the Spring palettes, combining the warmth of Spring with a pinch of coolness from the Summer season. It is marked by light, warm, and fresh colours that enhance the delicate and lively beauty of individuals with this palette.

The overall impression of Light Spring is vibrant, fresh, delicate and airy, with colours that are light, pastel-like and clear.

Who Falls into the Light Spring Season?

Light Springs will have an obvious lightness to their appearance with light hair, skin and eyes (relative to their ethnicity).

The only way to really determine your color season is through draping, however, there tend to be certain features that True Summers have, but keep in mind that there are always exceptions.

  • Skin: Warm undertones with a light and clear appearance. The skin often has a peachy, ivory, or golden quality. Some light springs can also have pale rosy skin that might at first glance appear cool, but which actually has a warm undertone. This is especially common for redheads.

  • Eyes: The eyes will usually be light and bright with eye colours such as light blue, light green, or light hazel. The eyes tend to be bright and sparkling with a clear distinction between the iris and whites of the eyes.

  • Hair: The natural hair color is light between a 7N-10N with colors ranging from light blonde to light brown with warm, golden, or strawberry undertones. Light Spring hair often has a sun-kissed appearance and almost always has warm golden undertones rather than the ashy ones of the summer season.

Light Springs have a naturally bright and lively appearance, and their best colours are those that mirror this freshness and lightness without being too dark or muted.

How Do You Know if You're a Light Spring?

Each season has a primary, secondary, and tertiary feature. Your primary feature is your dominant and the most obvious feature. Your secondary and tertiary features might be a little less obvious and harder to determine. Your secondary and tertiary features might be a little less obvious and harder to determine, but they are still equally as important in determining your coloring. For Light Springs, their features are the following:

  • Primarily Feature: Light. Light Springs will have naturally light colouring with light hair, skin and eyes. This is the first thing that people will typically notice about them.

  • Secondarily Feature: Warm. Light Springs are a neutral-warm season, meaning that they can pull off both warm and cool tones, however, warm tones will really make them shine.

  • Tertiarily Feature: Muted. Light Spring are slightly brighter than they are muted, although their appearance is not too bright.

Light Spring features gradient: warm, light and bright

To determine if you are a Light Summer, consider the following steps:

  1. Depth: Are your features (hair, eyes, skin, lips) primarily light, medium or dark? If they are dark or medium-dark, then you can eliminate Light Spring (and Light Summer) from your palette. If your features are light or medium-light, then you might be a Light Spring or possibly Light Summer.

  2. Contrast levels: Are your skin, hair and eyes all a similar depth or do you have much darker hair relative to your skin? Light Springs will usually have medium-low contrast. The skin, hair and eyes are typically light but might have a slight contrast between them.

  3. Cool vs Warm: Do you look better in light blues, light pinks, violets and blue-greens or does your face light up in yellows, peaches and corals? Warmer colours, like yellows and corals, will really make a Light Spring come alive! If you feel like you look better in cooler tones, then you might consider Light Summer instead.

  4. Chroma: Are your features more bright or muted? Can you wear bright clothing or do you look better in more muted colors? Light Springs will typically have slightly brighter features but not overly so, which would fall more into the domain of Bright Spring or Bright Winter. However, Light Springs will usually have brighter features than Light Summers, who have a more dusty appearance.

The best way to determine your season is to do a drape test. You can either purchase a physical drape test fan or try some digital tools online like vivaldicolor.com, Dressika, and others. Or, just find different color pieces in your wardrobe, compare them to each other and take notes!

You want to look for colors that smooth your skin out, lift your jawline and bring out your eyes, lips and eyebrows. The colors should harmonise with you, not being too overpowering and also not washing you out.

Also, take note of the colors that you really don't like on yourself. This can offer some clues to your season as well.

If you find that you look best in light, pastel-like, warm and bright shades, then you might just be a Light Spring!

  • Metals: Gold, rose gold, and warm, light metals

  • Stones: Pearls, citrine, light coral, peridot, turquoise, rose quartz, aquamarine

Avoid heavy or overly dark jewellery, which can clash with the light, airy quality of the Light Spring palette.

Hair Colors for Light Spring

Light Spring (along with Light Summer) are the season for natural blondes! The natural hair of light spring will typically be between a level 7N and level 10N with a slightly warm golden undertone. Light Springs will almost always be blonde in childhood and for some the hair stays blond but for others, it darkens to a dark blonde or light brown. Light Springs can also have strawberry blonde or red hair.

For Light Springs considering a hair color change, it’s important to maintain the light and warm quality of their natural hair. Colours that are too dark will feel heavy and off. Colors that are too cool, like platinum, can be too harsh and lack the warmth and softness that Light Springs need. Flattering hair color choices include:

  • Blonde (levels 7-10): Golden blonde, honey blonde, sandy blonde, strawberry blonde, light caramel blonde, old money blonde

  • Brown (level 6): Light golden brown, light caramel brown, bronde, light reddish brown

  • Highlights: Warm, sun-kissed highlights in shades of gold or honey can be a great choice for Light Springs and add dimension without overwhelming the natural color.

Avoid ashy, overly dark, or cool shades that can contrast too sharply and drown you out. Opt instead for the warm, light undertones.

Makeup for Light Spring

Makeup for Light Springs should be delicate and fun, enhancing their natural features with light, warm tones. Some makeup tips include:

  • Foundation: Choose foundations with warm or neutral undertones that match your skin. For Light Springs with pale skin, choose a foundation color that matches your fairness.

  • Blush: Blushes in the colors of soft peach, warm pinks, and light corals work well. As a Light Spring, you can also use a soft bronzer to add some glow to your complexion. Don't go overboard or too dark though.

  • Eyeshadow: Shades of warm taupe, light gold, peach, and light coral can look amazing.

  • Lipstick: Choose light, warm shades like peach, coral, light apricot, and warm pink. Avoid dark or overly cool lip colors since these can clash with your natural coloring.

  • Eyeliner and Mascara: Soft brown, warm taupe, or light gray eyeliner and mascara shades work better than black, which can be too harsh for the light complexion of Light Spring.

Sister Season: Light Summer

Light Spring's sister season is Light Summer. Both seasons are primarily light with lightness being their most obvious feature. Light Summers, however, are cooler and more muted. As a Light Spring, you may find that some colours from the Light Summer palette work well for you and you can borrow some colours from this palette. However, the warmth and liveliness of the Light Spring palette is where your home is at!
